Cultural myth of eclipse in a Central Javanese village: Between Islamic identity and local tradition

This article examines the relationship between religion, tradition and identity as seen from myth about eclipses in a village Central Java. Javanese people rural areas still hold beliefs passed down their ancestors eclipses, both lunar solar eclipses. Using qualitative approach, results of study showed that villagers believe occur because evil giants called buto named Batara Kala who try to devour sun or moon. natural phenomenon is believed bring disaster pregnant women livestock. To fight disaster, they must perform certain ceremonies rituals. Based on ethnographic studies, this research provides an overview eclipse mythology for locals analyses it theory. shows mythical rituals reflect continuous formation.
